Conrad Louis-Charles é um amigo de longa data. Eu o conheci na Filadélfia na década de 90, quando fazíamos um evento nos EUA. É o chamado "morador do mundo". Ele é um fotógrafo de mãos cheias que rodou o planeta clicando coisas maravilhosas e catástrofes.
Recentemente recebi este email abaixo. Ele está no front, no olho do furacão do Haiti. Algo impossível de descrever, em função das mazelas do cenário. Como ajudar a população daquele país? Por meio de sugestões e atitudes.
"No words to express my deepest thanks and everyone wanting to help. I cry all the time. I still can´t believe this happened. It is so painful to see so many people suffering and dying like this. And now we are afraid of a more deaths due to lack of medical care for some of the injured. The crisis will grow in other ways. What many are not realizing now is that the whole country of Haiti is affected since the capital is the main distribution point for food, goods, etc. In the north, where I have relatives in Cap-Haitian, many things are starting to run out. I will be going there shortly to check on everyone and help out.I am still looking for some loved ones in Port-au Prince. And so many of us are doing the same from around the world. I am in the Republica Dominicana now preparing to cross the border soon. I still can´t find a safe way for me to get around since we do not have our home anymore. My cousin Patrick works for UNICEF and he was very lucky to make it out of his building before it collapsed. He was injured but stable now.
I was hoping to try to stay with him but he is far up in the mountains.My main concern for our family now is getting to our house and check to see who is there. We are also afraid for our dear friends and neighbors who we have not heard from yet. We know that our homes were destroyed, so most likely, our neighbor´s home is down as well. We are just praying they are all right.My Mom and I am very frustrated because we are stuck, trying to see if everyone is ok. I´ve been ready and packed with some supplies to but I can´t put myself in a situation of not having a place to sleep. And the security is becoming an issue.Conditions are very difficult now in the capital. I am hoping to go in with a Pastor who has a jeep, this way I can get around easier and we can have food , water, etc with us. In the coming weeks and months, I will have a better idea how to get clothes, etc to victims directly. In the meantime, the rescue and relief efforts continue.This is incredible what is happening in Haiti. We will have to find the strength to make it through this with faith and the outpouring of love, help, prayers, and donations from around the world.Thank you so much. Muito muito Obrigado.
